HSV LSA | Dart 427ci Long Motor - assembled

The factory GM LS engine block is a marvel of engineering, and when the LS1 debuted, it was touted as capable of handling 500 horsepower. However, enthusiasts soon discovered that pushing beyond that threshold was a gamble fraught with risk. Fast forward to today, and Standard Bottom End (SBE) LS engines have become their own drag racing class. With advanced boost control, exotic race fuels, and fully optimized racing chassis, these engines are now propelling vehicles into the 7-second range over the quarter mile—an astounding feat!

So, why should you consider building an engine, and why is it necessary to change the block? Constructing an SBE race motor designed to endure just 10-15 miles throughout its entire life is one thing; building an engine capable of reliably lasting over 60,000 kilometers is an entirely different challenge. While the factory short block is impressive, as previously discussed, it is not indestructible. Quality conrods, a steel crankshaft, and forged pistons can only handle so much. If the block starts to flex or suffers from a split bore, you can expect a hefty repair bill, and the likelihood that your premium crank, conrods, and pistons are now compromised.

This is where the Dart SHP LSNext Iron block comes into play. Founded by Richard Maskin in 1981 in a modest two-car garage in Michigan, Dart Machinery has evolved into a trusted leader in aftermarket cylinder heads, intake manifolds, and engine blocks. The SHP LSNext iron block is rated to support 1500 horsepower, but, much like the original LS1, this rating doesn’t truly reflect the block’s potential. For those seeking additional peace of mind, Dart also offers the SHP LSNext Pro, crafted from superior iron for even greater durability.

When building a high-performance engine capable of delivering power while ensuring reliability, we recommend replacing your aluminum LS block at or around 900 horsepower at the flywheel (or 500 kW at the wheels). Upgrading to a Dart SHP LSNext Iron block maximizes your engine’s potential, allowing for consistent performance under demanding conditions. Coupling this robust block with CNC ported heads further enhances airflow and overall engine efficiency, making a formidable combination for any serious application.

In conclusion, building for power and reliability should always start with the right foundation. The Dart SHP LSNext Iron block is designed to withstand extreme performance, making it an essential choice for anyone looking to take their engine to the next level while ensuring longevity and dependability.
